A fossil fuel-producing jurisdiction has decided to tax electric cars because they exist. The wrinkle in this new tax model is that it replaces a consumption tax with a flat tax. This might be fine in some instances, but there’s a risk of inadvertently introducing unintended consequences. Why not enroll the electric car owners of Saskatchewan in trials of new technology to create a usage-based model to mimic the current fuel tax?
